Centralization was the rule of the day by the third millennium BCE. Empires grew and combined under the rule of powerful kings and expanding bureaucracies. These governments were often fragile, but they produced legal systems, written documents, and accounts of famous rulers – all sources used by archaeologists today to learn about the ancient world.
